Preventing Substance Abuse

Suffield Local Prevention CouncilThe Suffield Local Prevention Council (SLPC) continues to work toward promoting substance abuse prevention and early intervention within the Suffield community, and to provide a forum bringing together multiple community disciplines.

During the recent Suffield on the Green event we introduced our new logo and distributed information aimed at increasing awareness and conversations around Suffield of substance abuse concerns within our community.

Our logo focuses on the ability of each of us being able to reduce substance abuse by talking to our children about the risks of substance abuse and how to avoid becoming involved, by asking doctors if there is an alternative to prescribing opioids, by notifying authorities if you know of someone dealing drugs or supplying alcohol to minors, and most importantly by asking for help if you, a family member or a friend need it.

The SLPC will sponsor a Substance Abuse Prevention Forum on November 17, 2016 at the Suffield Middle School auditorium. Speakers will include Dr. David Herr, Medical Director of the ER at Johnson Memorial Hospital, representatives of the Suffield Police Department, Suffield Emergency Aid Association and Suffield Public Schools, as well as the Suffield Youth Services Director and several local residents who have been personally affected by substance abuse. Additional information will be available in the next Observer issue.

By working together we can be so much more effective in reducing the damage of alcohol and other drug abuse to our families, our friends and our community. Please contact Leslie Offenbach, Youth Services Director, at 860-668-3329 or loffenbach@suffieldtownhall.com.
