The Suffield Historical Society will host guest speaker Bob Madison on Wednesday, October 18, 7 p.m. at the Senior Center. Historian, author and lecturer, Mr. Madison will talk about the building of the Farmington Canal, originally planned to connect Long Island Sound with the St. Lawrence Seaway but eventually built from New Haven to Northampton. He will tell the story of the evolution of the canal from a waterway to a rail bed to 87 miles of trail. Learn the importance of the canal in the development of the Connecticut Valley and western Massachusetts and the complexities of constructing locks to master the hilly terrain. The public is invited.
