Spaulding students display their kindness certificates at a recent assembly focusing on that quality.

The auditorium at A. Ward Spaulding School was a sea of blue as students proudly wore their blue Spaulding Star t-shirts for an assembly focusing on kindness.

The Spaulding Star program, aligned to the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) framework, focuses on the teaching, modeling, and celebration of the specific character traits of respect, responsibility, and kindness. After a review of the star certificates that can be earned in various settings of the school (classroom, cafeteria, playground, and bus), the school community learned about the buddy benches installed on the playground by Eagle Scout and former Spaulding student, John Cremins.

Additionally, to celebrate World Kindness Month, all teachers were presented with a copy of the book Kindness is Cooler, Mrs. Ruler to be read with their classes during the week. In the classrooms, the students will fill out kindness hearts to express ways that they experienced kindness. These will be displayed in the halls at Spaulding School.

After kindness certificates were awarded to the students, the assembly concluded with Wyn Jespersen, the school’s music teacher, leading the school in a kindness song. This program aligns with the school’s improvement plan of enhancing social-emotional wellness and character education programming. Spaulding Stars shine with kindness!
