Michael Joseph Barron, Suffield High School senior, and Ashley Elizabeth O’Brien, Windsor Locks High School senior, have been selected as recipients of the Sibbil Dwight Kent Chapter of the Daughters of The American Revolution Good Citizen Award. This award is special because the recipient is chosen by teachers and peers as best exemplifying the qualities of good citizenship among the students of the school’s senior class. It is regarded as equal to the Eagle Scout Award.

Mickey Barron

Michael, the son of Edwin and Susan Barron, has excelled academically, participating in Honors and Advanced Placement classes throughout high school. He plans to enter a pre-med program in college, and to be in the Interpreter Training Program for American Sign Language for Medical Certification. He has an interest in computer programming. He has not yet selected where he will attend college. His varied extra-curricular activities include Captain of the Wildcats Swim Team, the Suffield SWAT Team (Students Working for Advanced Technology) and a Jr. Internship at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center Replacement Institute. He is an Eagle Scout candidate with a project of designing a studio for “Morning Update”, a high school communications program that he participates in each day.

Ashley O’Brien

Ashley O’Brien

Ashley, the daughter of Jessica O’Brien, will choose social work as a college major and a career as a social worker in a hospital, working with families of sick children. She has not yet selected her college. She has served as vice-president of her class throughout high school. Ashley is captain of the high school soccer team and participates in outdoor track. Her other activities include Show Choir, Student Council and the Principal’s Advisory Committee. Her awards include First Honors, Second Honors, National Honor Society, Character Award Through Habits of Scholarship, Dean’s List at Goodwin College courses, and the Susan B. Anthony Book Award from the University of Rochester.

Sibbil Dwight Kent Chapter was organized in Suffield June 10, 1896. Its members are descendants of someone who served in the war of independence. Objectives are historic preservation, promotion of education and patriotic endeavor emphasizing the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The DAR motto is “God, Home and Country.”
