What’s Happening at the EAA This Month?

James F. Coggins, Jr. Community Service Award Open to Applicants:

In memory of our late volunteer and Board Member, James F. Coggins, Jr., the EAA offers a $1,000 award to a graduating Suffield High School senior who demonstrates selflessness, generosity and concern for the community through his/her volunteer activities. Applicants are required to submit a 500-word essay supporting their selection to the EAA at 450 South Street, Suffield 06078 or email to janetf@suffieldeaa.org. The deadline to apply is midnight on Monday, May 14.

Jane Purtill Fuller Scholarship for Nursing or Social Service Candidates:

To recognize the many contributions of our past employee and long-time supporter of the EAA, the Board of Directors dedicates an annual needs-based scholarship in memory of Jane Purtill Fuller. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Suffield High School senior pursuing a nuring or social service field of study. Applicants wishing to apply are encouraged to fill out the common application at SHS or call the EAA at 860-668-1986. Application deadline is May 14.

HELP the EAA Food Pantry by Supporting Letter Carriers Food Drive:

“Help Stamp Out Hunger” On Saturday, May 12, residents can donate non-perishable food and personal care items to the EAA Food Pantry simply by leaving the items in, or near, their mailbox. Carriers will collect the items and deliver them to the Food Pantry the same day.

Rental Rebate Program for Elderly & Disabled Kicks Off:

State law provides a reimbursement program for Connecticut renters who are elderly or totally disabled, and whose incomes do not exceed certain limits. Persons renting an apartment or room, or living in cooperative housing may be eligible for this program. The EAA is now taking applications for the CT Renter’s Rebate program.

Some Ongoing Programs and Updates:

Parkinson’s Peer Support Group Meets Monthly at the Suffield Senior Center: 

The group’s goal is to share ideas and resources in the management and treatment of Parkinson’s disorder. The next meeting is May 14th from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. Caregivers are welcome and encouraged to attend. Topics vary monthly. Refreshments are served. For more information, call Janet at the EAA.

Operation Fuel- One-time Grant of up to $500 to Assist Eligible Families with their Energy Bills:

Operation Fuel partners with more than 100 agencies across the state to provide low-income families with year-round emergency energy assistance. The EAA is a partner agency! If financially qualified, assistance can be provided for any energy type – oil, electric, natural gas, kerosene, wood, propane, pellets, and other energy sources. Girl Scouts Create Easter Joy for Children and Teens! 

Troops 10973, with help from Girl Scout Troop 10959, created Easter Baskets and candy bags for 110 income qualified children and teens. Candy was donated by Suffield Girl Scout Troops with help from Land Warrior Crossfit. Troop 10959 includes: Brinley Rodriguez (and her Daisy scout twin sisters – Nora & Elise) Hannah Pixton, Juliana Balsamo, Kaylee Williams, Marie Conley, Qwynn LaFleur, Sophia Romaniw, Camille Fawthrop,and Troop 11963, Anna Finnigan.
