New Deputy Fire Chief Dan Vindigni smiles as two young members of the department pin the two symbols of his rank. At left is Justin Seger, a SHS senior in his fourth year as a fire cadet; at right is former cadet John Urbanski, now a volunteer firefighter and college student.

Along with members of the Suffield Fire Commission, many friends and members of the Fire Department attended a swearing-in ceremony in the Ratley Road fire station prior to the commission’s September 11 meeting. After remarks by First Selectman Melissa Mack and others, Town Clerk Kathy Dunai swore volunteer firefighter Dan Vindigni in as Deputy Chief of the department. First Selectman Mack described Dan as a skilled and experienced member of the department who had particularly good knowledge of emergency management. In his new volunteer position, he will assist Chief Chuck Flynn in various ways and stand in for the chief where necessary.

In his own remarks, Dan spoke of the future of the department, recognizing the need for more young firefighters. With that thought in mind, after his wife, Laura, had pinned his new badge, Dan asked two young members of the department to add the deputy chief lapel pins.
