This wintertime photo of Lester Smith was taken in 2003 for an Observer article entitled “Lester Wears Many Hats” by Jane Fuller.

In honor of our town historian and the Observer extraordinaire volunteer, Lester Smith’s 90th birthday, The Suffield Observer will be sponsoring a writing contest.

The contestants will be asked to pen a piece under 500 words with the following words by Nicholas Bentley as inspiration, “Learning History is easy, learning its lessons seems almost impossibly difficult.

The writers will be asked to share what they have learned from history that has proved to be a difficult and valuable lesson.

Entries should be submitted to inbox@thesuffieldobserver.com by the November 10 contest deadline. Please reference Lester Smith Writing Contest in the subject area of the email.

The winning piece will be published in the in the December/January edition of the Observer. The author will receive a $90 cash prize.
