Suffield Library Foundation Update

The Suffield Public Library Foundation is a vibrant organization, and we too have anxiously awaited news on the progress of the Kent Memorial Library (KML). We have not let the frustrating PCB predicament deter our mission to support our town library.

The foundation formed in 2009 because many in town believed it was a necessary and fiscally responsible decision to set up an organization that allowed citizens to support KML through charitable gifting. Under the town leadership of First Selectman Scott Lingenfelter, our organization was formed. Our 501(c)(3) foundation serves as a conduit so that generous people can be sure their donations are meeting all eligible requirements of charitable contributions, and the funds are used exclusively for the benefit of the KML.

During these nine years we have worked with two library directors and have raised funds for numerous items for the library. In 2015, we gave the Town of Suffield $100,000. We have also purchased furniture totaling $67,881; contributed to the fiber optics expenses in the amount of $10,491; and provided carpeting that cost $13,500. In addition, we have run three programs with House of Sand and Fog author Andre Dubus III; visual effects extraordinaire and Suffield High alum Greg Butler; as well as Steve Katz, musician, author, and founder of the musical group Blood, Sweat and Tears. Over $7,000 has also been gifted to the library for various other expenses. Mel Chafetz helped to facilitate a major gift from The Michael J. Zak foundation, a gift totaling  $850,000.

Mel Chafetz has been the chairman since 2011. Current board members of the foundations are Carl Casinghino, Chris Childs (Treasurer), Lisa Coatti (Secretary), Becki Fuller, Joseph Greco, Jackie Hemond, Claire Kawalec, John Kearney (Asst. Treasurer), and Lauren Life (VP). You are more than welcome to make a tax deductible contribution to our organization in 2018. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 606, Suffield, CT 06078.
