Summer Sampler Camp at the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden

Leave technology behind and discover the traditional skills of the past in our Summer Sampler Camp. Students age 12-16 are invited to join the ladies of the beautiful Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden to immerse themselves in more advanced crafts and activities popular during the 18th – 20th centuries.

Young historians will have exclusive access to observe collection items not regularly on view to understand how they were made and used. We’ll sew a needle case in the colonial kitchen, embroider a pillow covering similar to those found in the Burbank and Phelps bed chambers, and learn about 19th-century ceramics and decorative arts. While we emboss stationery for our own letters (signed with goose feather pens!), we’ll understand the pivotal role that correspondence played during the Revolutionary time. Each day, we’ll gather for a proper tea and conversation on topics chosen by each camper. The final day will be devoted to the display and presentation of our work for friends and families.

The Summer Sampler Camp will be held Monday through Friday, July 13 – 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants should bring a hearty lunch and water bottle each day. Registration required by June 29th. For more information and to register, contact phelps.hatheway@ctlandmarks.org or visit www.ctlandmarks.org/camps. For ages 12-16; $300 per week; $275 CTL Members
