VFW Poker Night Aids Vets

This year’s Poker Night season came to an abrupt end with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.  Despite the season being cut short, $1,265 was raised and given to Suffield Community Aid to help veterans in need.  The Poker Nights are run by the Suffield Knights of Columbus Council 6281 and held at the Suffield VFW Post 9544.  The game is a Texas Hold’em tournament.  Five dollars from each player is donated to the SCA in addition to a 50/50 raffle.  The games take place on the first Friday of the month from October to April.

Last year’s donation was used to help four veterans in town.  It covered the partial cost of providing weekly home health aides for a veteran and his wife who were having trouble managing.  It provided five nights of supplemental Hospice care for a veteran choosing to die at home.  It also covered the cost of an emergency call system for two veterans with a history of falls.

The SCA has expressed their gratitude to the Knights of Columbus and Landry Sic VFW, Post 9544.  We hope that the games can resume in October in order to continue supporting our local heroes.
