Borax Box

You may have heard that being continually exposed to chemicals is unhealthy. Let me add my voice to that chorus. Give natural household products a try. Our environment, whether outdoors or indoors, is our blessing to care for.

Here’s a recipe from P. Allen Smith for dishwasher soap with minerals that’s kind to the environment and your wallet. All it takes are three ingredients.

1 cup Sodium Carbonate Washing Soda

1/2 cup Epsom Salt

1 cup Borax

Mix and store in pint-size containers. Use only one tablespoon for loaded dishwasher.

Also, for sparkling glasses, dishes, etc., add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse component.

But wait . . . there’s more . . .

 • Sodium Carbonate Washing Soda fights tough stains and eliminates odors. This cleaning agent receives an “A” grade from the Environmental Working Group for its safety to both the environment and humans.

 • Epsom salt is gritty and good for scouring. (Every Sunday hubby and I do an Epsom Salt warm-water-foot-soak. It’s relaxing and loaded with magnesium).

 • Borax is a great multi-purpose household cleaner. A popular brand is 20 Mule Team. This brings back childhood memories when we watched the TV show, Death Valley Days.
