Jay Presser, Board Chairman for The Suffield Observer, hands $1,000 checks to this year’s winners of the Observer’s scholarships, Lucie Casinghino and Cam Begley.

The Suffield Observer’s two $1,000 scholarships, one in memory of Sam Fuller, the Observer’s founder, and one in memory Bob Warren, a former chairman of the paper, were recently awarded to two exceptional young people.

The Samuel Spencer Fuller scholarship was presented to Cam Begley, a Suffield High School senior who will be attending Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland in the fall. His expected major is interdisciplinary studies of sociology, political science and economics. Cam is not only an excellent student and athlete, but his work as a volunteer shows his commitment to the community. He is the founder of MyKoats4Kids, a non-profit that collects gently used coats for children in the foster care system. To date over 500 coats have been distributed to children in need in the local community. He also worked as a peer counselor at SHS, a member of Best Buddies International, a student ambassador for the Wingman Project at SMS and was selected to be a student volunteer on the SHS Student Advisory Group to assist incoming freshmen students make a smooth transition to the high school.

The Robert O.Y. Warren III scholarship was awarded to Lucie Casinghino who will be starting college in the fall at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada with an expected major in English. Lucie is another student who has varied volunteer experiences, but has also received many awards and recognitions for her writing. In 2016, Lucie received the Scholastic Art and Writing Award- the Gold Key for Flash Fiction, at Carnegie Hall. She received the Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Award again in 2107. She was also an AP Scholar Award winner in 2020.
