Hartford Hospital’s “Take the Time” Digital Mobile Mammography is Coming Back to Suffield: Hartford Hospital’s Digital Mobile Mammography coach will be at Suffield Senior Center on Wednesday, September 22 from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. These screenings will be offered to women over the age of 40 who have not had a mammogram in the last year. All screenings take less than 15 minutes with privacy and comfort assured. Due to COVID-19, you must be registered in advance. Appointments are limited. Call SCA to register.

Beware of Scams – They are Everywhere! In conjunction with local stakeholders, we are presenting a series on scams beginning this fall. There will be a kickoff on September 30 with guest speaker Robin Saunders. Robin is a seasoned educator with more than 30 years of teaching experience. Cybersecurity and education are her passions. Subsequent speakers will target senior scams, adult scams and children/teen scams.

In-Person Bereavement Support Group Starts up Again: Masonicare is partnering with Suffield Community Aid to offer a 6 week in-person support group for persons who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The group will meet at SCA, 450 South Street, Suffield, beginning Friday October 1st from 10–11:30 a.m. The program is offered at no cost. Registration is required and the expectation is that all participants will be fully vaccinated. Please call SCA for more information.

Parkinson’s Peer Support Group at Suffield Senior Center: The next meeting is scheduled for September 14 from 11 a.m.–noon at 145 Bridge Street and will include a pizza lunch. Caregivers are welcome to come at 10:15 a.m., prior to the regular meeting, to share ideas and resources. Call Janet at SCA to register your attendance.

Some Ongoing Programs and Updates:

Rental Rebate Program for Elderly & Disabled Residents:  The State provides a reimbursement program for renters who are elderly or disabled, and whose incomes do not exceed certain limits. Rebates are based on a percentage of income versus rent & utility expenses. SCA is scheduling appointments.
Would Adult Day Care Open Up Your World? SCA is partnering with the Windsor Caring Connection to ensure that our residents have access to quality adult day care. SCA is providing introductory subsidies to encourage participation. The Caring Connection is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and provides socialization, structure, medication management and personal care with on-site nursing.

Social Service Consultations at Kent Memorial Library: Pat Beeman, M.S.W., holds office hours the third Tuesday of the month at the KML. Pat serves as Suffield’s appointed Municipal Agent for the Elderly. Residents wishing to schedule a confidential consultation for September 21 can register online by going to suffield-library.org. Would You Benefit from Clinical Counseling Support? SCA is financially partnering to provide counseling for residents who are experiencing challenges and are seeking the help of a licensed therapist. SCA can assist with the cost of co-pays for folks with insurance. For those without insurance, free, limited counseling sessions will be covered. Call 860-668-1986.

Are there Places you want to go, but Transportation is not Available? In conjunction with Nutmeg Senior Rides, SCA can help financially qualified seniors, age 65 and older, or persons with a disability get to where they want to go when the Suffield Mini-Bus is not available. Nutmeg Senior Rides provides door-to-door transportation, for any purpose, 365 days a year. Call 860-668-1986 to see if you qualify.

COVID-19 Help is Available: This special fund targets assistance to those residents who do not qualify for other needs-based programs and whose lives have been negatively changed by COVID-19. Call 860-668-1986 for confidential help.

Free Blood Pressure Screen at the Suffield Senior Center: Suffield Community Aid sponsors free blood pressure clinics for residents of all ages at the Suffield Senior Center on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m.–noon. No appointments needed.
