Does Your Child Want to Attend Camp but Costs are Too High?

Summer is right around the corner! SCA has funding available to subsidize camp costs for eligible Suffield children and youth who wish to attend Suffield Parks & Rec. and other camp programs.

Rental Rebate Program for Elderly & Disabled Residents:

The State provides a reimbursement program for renters who are elderly or disabled, and whose incomes do not exceed certain limits. SCA now is taking applications!

James F. Coggins, Jr. Community Service Award- Open to Applicants:

In memory of our late volunteer and Board Member, James F. Coggins, Jr., SCA offers a $1,000 award to a graduating Suffield high school senior who demonstrates selflessness, generosity and concern for the community through their volunteer activities. Applicants are required to submit a 500-word essay, by midnight on May 9th supporting their selection to SCA at 450 South Street, Suffield 06078 or email to daniellea@suffieldcommunityaid.org.

Jane Purtill Fuller Scholarship for Nursing or Social Service Candidates:

To recognize the many contributions of our past employee and long-time supporter of SCA, the Board of Directors dedicates an annual needs-based scholarship in memory of Jane Purtill Fuller. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Suffield high-school senior pursuing a nursing or social service field of study. Interested applicants are encouraged to fill out the common application at Suffield High School. Applications are due on Monday, May 9.

Some Ongoing Program and Updates:

SCA is Offering Free Lunch at the Suffield Senior Center:

Spring is here, and it’s time to get out of the house and enjoy the spring air! SCA is offering to cover the cost for up to two lunches per week, for financially eligible Suffield residents at the Senior Center. Fresh, nutritionally balanced (and really delicious!) meals are prepared and served at the Senior Center.

Door-to-Door Transportation: Take a Ride with Nutmeg Senior Rides!

What if transportation was not a barrier on nights and weekends when the Mini-Bus is not operating? Perhaps you’d go to a restaurant, the cemetery, the library, a church service or a friend’s house? You can! In conjunction with Nutmeg Senior Rides, Suffield Community Aid has funding to assist financially qualified Suffield residents, age 65 and older, or persons with a disability, get to their desired destination. Nutmeg Senior Rides provides door-through-door transportation, for any purpose, 365 days a year.

Parkinson’s Peer Support Group at the Suffield Senior Center:

Our next meeting is scheduled for May 10 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Senior Center. Program TBD. Pizza will be served. Please call SCA to RSVP.

Operation Fuel: A One-time Grant of up to $500 to Assist Eligible Families with Their Energy Bills:

Operation Fuel partners with SCA and more than 100 agencies across the state, to provide low-income families with year-round emergency energy help. Assistance is provided for residents in crisis to help with their oil, electric, natural gas, propane, or water arrearage bills. If you’re interested in learning more or think you may be eligible, act fast, as funds end on May 27. Go to www.operationfuel.org for more info.

Mental Health Financial Support:

Let us help you-take-care-of-you! SCA is offering financial support for Suffield residents to access mental health services. SCA can assist with co-pays for folks with insurance. For those without insurance, free and limited counseling sessions will be covered.

Free Blood Pressure Screening at the Suffield Senior Center:

Suffield Community Aid sponsors free blood pressure clinics for residents of all ages at the Suffield Senior Center on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m.- 12 p.m. No appointments needed.

SCA will be seeking youth volunteers to help us plant this year’s garden in our new raised garden beds. Thank you to SPL Troop 260 for their amazing craftsmanship and hard work to build the beds and prep our garden for planting!
