For the second year in a row, the Suffield Rotary will participate in the Day of Service, hosted by the Rotary International group. This event will gather participation from more than 500 Rotary clubs and 14,000 Rotarians across five states and three countries. Previously hosted in April of last year, this event brings communities together in the perfect way to celebrate and demonstrate the motto and mission of the club, “Service Above Self”. The Suffield Rotary is pleased to participate in this event for another year, which is to be hosted on May 20 with our goal being to clean up the Windsor Locks Canal State Trail.
The members of the Rotary Club will roll up their sleeves and embrace the participation of many other local groups to assist in this project. These include the Knights of Columbus, the Cub Scouts, the Girl Scouts, students from the Interact Club (the high school version of Rotary), the Suffield Fire Department, town employees, the Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association, and individuals who have signed up to help out.
Teams will be assigned to areas along the trail to assist us in our clean up processes. Along the trail there will be designated areas of clean up for all of our teams to assist with different projects. All along the trail, groups will be tasked with picking up trash and litter to be disposed of. The grass and weeds on either side of the trail will be trimmed down or pulled, with the assistance of yard tools and protective gear. We will have a mural painted as well, to add some brightness and light to the area by an artist in town. And of course, the Suffield Rotary will provide a cookout for all these hard-working volunteers.
We are hoping for blue skies and sunshine on this spring day! We thank all of our volunteers in advance for the cooperation and service that will improve the use of this trail for all users.
