Kate Jarest is our new Associate Director!

Kate started working at KML in January 2022 as a Reference Librarian. Surely you’ve seen her smiling face at the reference desk or leading a fun program.

Kate was just recently promoted to take over as KML’s Associate Director. In addition to her work as one of our reference librarians, Kate will be more involved in the planning of services and programs, providing leadership to our staff, and helping me with some of the administrative work needed to run the library.

Those of you who know Kate are familiar with her friendly demeanor, professionalism and love for finding you just what you need, from great books to facts, figures and reliable articles. But let’s all get to know Kate a bit more. I asked her a few questions….

• How long have you been a librarian, and what drew you to the profession?
I’ve been a librarian for more than 10 years. When I was changing careers, I started thinking about what was important to me. Many of those answers were found in libraries and librarianship. I enjoy helping people find the answers they need and the books they want and creating a community space where everyone is welcome.

• What is your favorite thing about being a librarian?
When a patron comes in and needs help getting an e-book, and I’m able to help them get their first book checked out. When someone doesn’t know what to read next, and I’m able to help them find something they’ll like. When a kid tells me all about a book they’ve read or a story they’ve written. All of those things are my favorites.

• What is your favorite thing about the Kent Memorial Library?
The people! The patrons and staff at KML are amazing.

• How would you describe your job to other people?
I help people find answers and [teach them] how to tell if sources are reputable. I get people the materials they want, whether that’s books, DVDs or magazines. Sometimes I create programs for older kids/teens. I help make sure that the library is an inviting space for everyone.

• What do you do for fun in your free time?
I like to garden, hike, and spend time with family. Sometimes, I just hang out in a hammock in the backyard and read.

• If you weren’t a librarian, what would you want to do as a profession?
I would be a forest ranger.

• What is your favorite movie or TV show?
The movie I will watch any time, any place is The Blues Brothers. For TV, I’m enjoying Good Omens right now.

So, if you haven’t met Kate yet, swing by the library and say hello!
