Photo from the collection of Barbara (Sikes) Tomlinson

This old photo, taken about 1896, shows Sumner Sykes’s new house, built close behind the old house of his ancestor Victory Sykes near the northwest corner of Mapleton Avenue and Hickory Street. The old center-chimney building was built in 1783. It was taken down soon after the photo; the new house burned down in 1912. From the April 2012 Observer.
