First Selectman’s Update

I hope everyone enjoyed their summer and all the fun events and activities it brings. Hopefully everybody got to enjoy a vacation or some fun day trips throughout. Kids are returning to school and as we prepare for a change in seasons and cooler weather, here’s what’s been happening and will be happening in Town:

If you haven’t heard, the Town has entered into an agreement with the Town of Windsor Locks in a “Mutual Use of Recreational Areas” agreement. Residents of Suffield will have free access to Pesci Pool and the Windsor Locks High School pool, in exchange for use of Babb’s Beach and Sunrise Park. Simply show proof of residency upon entrance. You will still be required to have your sticker to enter our parks, which is still free. For any concerned about a large influx into our parks, we’ve had fewer than 25 Windsor Locks residents over the first three weeks of this agreement.

We recently started the Prisoner Work Program back up to assist with regular Public Work duties and roadside clean up around Town. More details can be found in a separate article in this month’s Observer edition.

Keep an eye out for CT Water doing work over the next few months on their water lines on Mountain Road and the Silver Creek/Fair Hill Lane areas.

After a successful launch, and continued success at Spaulding with Sustainable Suffield’s composting program, the program will launch this month in McAlister. We look forward to its success there and big thank you to Kris Pryce, teachers, and staff for participating and helping to get the program going.

After a few delays, we’ve completed the irrigation work at Cervione field that was funded through the ARPA funds. We look forward to the better care and maintenance the system will provide for the field.

As fall and cooler weather approaches, don’t forget to check out all the local farm stands around Town. Support local!

Due to dumping issues, we will be moving the Red Cross drop-off bins located on Thompsonville Road to the Landfill.

Library Director interviews are underway. We hope to find a qualified candidate over the next few months. Once again, a big thank you to Beth Chafetz for overseeing operations in the absence of a director.

Planning and conversations are already beginning for America’s 250th celebration in two years statewide and locally. For any organizations already planning or individuals interested, we will be forming a committee to oversee this much like the 350th group. Check the Town website over the next few months if you are interested in getting involved.

My First Selectman Coffee Hours will start back up this month. It’s the first and third Friday of the month at Café Barista starting at 8:30 a.m.

Don’t forget to check out the great programs on the Community Services and Library calendars.

Throughout the months of October-December, I will be starting my “First Selectman Community Tour.” Residents will have the opportunity to sign-up online to meet with me, at their homes to discuss Town issues or concerns, or simply have a small social gathering amongst neighbors and friends. Time slots will be limited and available on Friday’s from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Look for further details in the near future on the Town website.

Good luck to all the kids, teachers and staff in the new school year… and as always, feel free to stop by Town Hall. My door is always open.

Suffield on the Green is September 7 and 8. Hope to see
everybody there!
