Visibility of Building Numbers (Help Us Help You)
Your Suffield Emergency Services (Police, Ambulance, and Fire) respond to emergency assistance requests 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in all types of weather. At times it is difficult to find emergency locations due to the inability of responders to see the building numbers. It is important to ensure that your building numbers can be seen from the street.
The following information should help your building numbers be seen:
- Use plain block numbers at least 4 (four) inches tall and mount them on a background of a contrasting color.
- Reflective signs or nighttime illumination should increase visibility.
- If your building is highly visible from the street, the numbers could be on the front of the building or on a sign, post, mailbox or other type of device that allows the numbers to be visible and readable from BOTH left and right street approaches.
- If your building is set back far from the street, or there is an obstruction that prohibits view of the building, the numbers could be located on a sign, post, mailbox or other type of device that is located near your driveway or walkway entrance and is visible and readable from BOTH left and right street approaches.
- The numbers should be at least 3 (three) feet above the ground to avoid not being seen due to problems like snow and vegetation.
The Suffield Firefighters Association recommends the use of properly placed readable signs to assist during urgent emergency responses.
The Suffield Firefighters Association has (with funding obtained through citizen donations) purchased one hundred reflective 6” x 18” blue two-sided sign blanks along with sufficient 4” white block numerals.
The Association will be offering these 100 signs FREE to the first 100 Suffield resident requests received at the Suffield Fire Department booth during Suffield on the Green, Saturday, September 7, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, September 8, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Once all the free signs are given away, the same style signs will continue to be offered (as the Suffield Firefighters Association has done in the past) at cost of the materials.
Both the free and at cost orders will be taken and when the signs have been produced, arrangements will be made for citizens to pick them up.
