The summer months are generally quiet around the Post. Many members and patrons are out of town vacationing or busy with other summer activities, which also gives our volunteer staff the much-needed chance to do the same. We are truly thankful for each and every volunteer (you know who you are) for your time, effort and dedication in making our Post a warm, friendly and inviting place to spend time; perhaps over a beverage and conversation or helping us accomplish our mission of veteran and community support.
Membership: If you are a veteran who has honorably served, and has participated in a war, campaign, or expedition on foreign soil or hostile waters and want to be a part of our dynamic and expanding organization; helping veterans and our community; please visit the Post during Duke’s Canteen hours or email: suffieldvfw9544@gmail.com
2024 Scholarships Awarded: On Thursday evening August 1, with the Post officers, several members and proud parents present, Andrew Bombard and Luke Robles each read their essays on Americanism. Each delivered a personal perspective from their own life’s experiences, and an appreciation for our uniquely special nation and all the liberties and opportunities we have because of the sacrifices of generations of Americans before us. Both young men also expressed specific intentions to be productive and active citizens for the benefit of others and community. We wish these fine young men much success, reward and happiness as they begin the next chapter in their lives.
Scholarship Fundraiser: On September 28 of this year, we will conduct a fundraiser with local food, live music and raffle prizes to benefit our annual scholarship fund. Our major sponsors for this year’s event are: Artioli Dodge, Artioli Realty, AMP Electrical with food donated by Smoke BBQ and Belvedere of East Windsor. If you want to become a sponsor or donate a raffle prize, please email: suffieldvfw9544@gmail.com.
Red Cross Blood Drive: On June 19, we transformed our canteen and dining room and hosted the American Red Cross to conduct a blood drive. Thanks to all the first-time and returning donors, who together donated thirty-five units of valuable life-giving blood in just five quick hours.
Back to School Drive: Again this year; members and supporters of the Post were very generous in donating much-needed school supplies for local students. Items were collected at the Post and delivered to Suffield Community Aid to ensure they are distributed to those in need.
Duke’s Canteen: Come be a guest of a veteran at Duke’s Canteen; open at 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday through Sunday. Duke’s has multiple TV screens showing sports, news, or game shows, you can also play a game of pool or darts and listen to music in a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.
Veterans Breakfast: On the first Saturday of each month, we offer a full breakfast prepared by volunteers for veterans and sponsored by local businesses and citizens as well as our Post. The breakfast is a wonderful chance for veterans and their families to share a meal and perhaps make new acquaintances or meet an old friend from the past. If you want to sponsor or volunteer to help with the breakfast; please email or call the Post.
