SGTCF: Spotlight on Suffield Players

The Suffield Greater Together Community Fund (SGTCF) awards grants to non-profits in Suffield, or that directly benefit Suffield residents. Periodically we highlight the work of one of our grant recipients. Today we highlight The Suffield Players. A grant from the Suffield Greater Together Community Fund helped fund critical fire and electrical codes compliance upgrades.

The Suffield Players has been in operation since 1952. Today this all-volunteer organization owns and is located in the historic Mapleton Hall, having mounted over 170 productions. Each season the company produces three main stage productions, a holiday benefit, the New Faces program which gives aspiring actors a chance to perform and three free staged readings at Kent Memorial Library. Their productions cover a wide range of theater styles. Tickets are available for single shows or by subscription. The final play of this season will be Becky’s New Car by Steven Dietz, directed by Chris Rohmann May 2, 3, 4*, 9, 10, 11, 16 and 17. Plays have already been chosen for the 2025-26 season and can be seen on their website.

Community theaters mean many opportunities for community involvement. Suffield Players depend on volunteers in a wide range of areas with a wide range of time commitments. It’s an opportunity to support the organization, but more importantly to experience the joy and camaraderie of community theater. And putting on high quality plays is only part of the story. The group also awards annual scholarships to students of all grade levels, some of whom have gone on to make theater their vocation or avocation. They provide educational opportunities in all aspects of theater. You can learn by doing in such areas as theater tech, costume design, set design and management.
