So, what does a Suffield Rotarian do in December to close out the year? They do what they always do- have fun and serve the community. In spades!
December kicked off with Suffield Rotary’s 10th Annual Sand and Salt for Seniors event. This initiative supports seniors who need help keeping their walkways and driveways safe during snowy winters. Seniors in need reach out to the Suffield Rotary, and on the designated Saturday morning, December 6—fittingly accompanied by snowfall—Rotarian volunteers and their families gathered at Ffyler Place.
The Department of Public Works, led by Lee Corbet, provided essential support by using their equipment to fill buckets, which had been sourced by the Rotary with a sand and salt mixture. Each bucket was topped with a lid to keep its contents dry throughout the winter. Volunteers then delivered these buckets to seniors at no cost, receiving heartfelt thanks in return. On this snowy morning, sixty-six buckets were distributed, helping to ensure the safety and comfort of older residents.
Four days later, Rotarians gathered for a purely festive occasion: a holiday dinner at the beautiful LaNotte Waterside Grille in Windsor, Connecticut. The evening featured delicious food, laughter and a lively Yankee Swap, creating a joyful atmosphere and lasting memories for all who attended.
Just three days after the holiday dinner, on December 13, Suffield Rotarians and their supporters braved “chilly” weather to participate in Suffield Alight. Rotary volunteers served 33 gallons of hot chocolate—topped with mini marshmallows and whipped cream—to warm attendees. The hot chocolate was offered free of charge, and any offers to pay were redirected to the nearby iconic red kettle benefiting Suffield Community Aid (SCA).
When a local family suffered a devastating house fire, the Rotary partnered with other community groups—including the Firefighters Association, Suffield Police Department, and Suffield Volunteer Ambulance—and coordinated with SCA to provide a substantial donation for the family. The community united to ensure the family received the support and kindness they needed during a difficult time.

Helped by the Grinch, one Elf, and one very cute puppy, Rotarians “Ring the Bell” during the holiday season to raise money for the SCA.
The tradition of “Ringing the Bell” to benefit Suffield Community Aid and the Salvation Army continued throughout the holiday season. Rotary volunteers took on the final weekend before Christmas, determined to finish strong. With enthusiastic participation from Suffield Rotarians, SHS Interact Club members, the Assistant District Governor, the Grinch, a sparkly elf, and some adorable pups, the team rang the bell at both Dunkin and CVS from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Their efforts spread holiday cheer and encouraged generous donations, which will benefit the community throughout the year.
As Suffield Rotary continues its commitment to “Service Above Self,” several new projects are planned for the coming year. Community members are invited to join or learn more about Suffield Rotary. Meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. at Tavern 1927 and Suffield Country Club. For more information, reach out to any Rotarian or email ndonais@snet.net.
