It’s that time of year again, our WSCC Souper Bowl of Caring! On Super Bowl Sunday, the children collect non-perishable food items for the elderly and disabled in town. The children spend weeks making announcements, drawing posters, and organizing the collection of hundreds of cans of food (close to 500 last year). It all makes them so proud to know that they’ve made a difference in someone else’s life.

Proud children stack the donations.
We started this tradition three years ago in memory of a parishioner, Deborah Halladay Pierce, a beloved town schoolteacher and long time Sunday School teacher. Debbie loved, loved, loved children so we thought it appropriate to have her be the inspiration for this event. The children collect cans while we grownups get cooking. During our service the children go out into the congregation and collect the cans. They pile them high and then we follow our service with a potluck of homemade soups and bread. The children always sneak up to the sanctuary and make can sculptures and count their takings.
It is a wonderful, warm gathering of generations. The children learn that they can change the world one can of food at a time, and the grownups among us receive both physical and spiritual sustenance while we’re having some fun watching the kiddos caper about. If you want to join in on the show, come on the 18th, laden with goods and watch the fun. 10 a.m. service as usual.
Blessings on your day, Denise.
