Board of Education February 2, 2026
Recognition

The Board of Education recognized the Suffield Middle School Robotics Team for their notable success at the 2026 VEX Robotics Competition. Suffield Middle School Technology Education Teacher and Robotics Coach Kevin Mattia, joined by students Riley Dougherty, Isaac Lavoie, and Robert Snyder, provided an overview of the program and recent accomplishments. Superintendent Dunbar and the Board congratulated the team on a successful competition.

Superintendent’s Report

Superintendent Dunbar reported that the bridge behind Spaulding School requires significant repair. He provided a preliminary estimate of $100,000-200,000 to bring the decking and railings up to code for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

The superintendent shared that the district reviewed the annex building as a potential location for an alternative Special Services program. After evaluating the space, it was determined that the current layout would not adequately meet student needs without significant renovations or additions. As a result, the administration is exploring alternative options, including incorporating specialized program space into the specifications for a new or renovated middle school facility to better support long-term programming needs.

Superintendent Dunbar noted that discussions have begun regarding the possible implementation of cell phone holders in high school classrooms to reduce classroom distractions and support student focus during the school day. Administration is researching best practices and gathering feedback before making recommendations. He notified the Board that the high school’s NESDEC accreditation visit is now scheduled for the 2028-29 school year.

Business Manager’s Report

Business Manager Eric Remington detailed the shift from asphalt shingles to a metal roof for the roof replacement project at Suffield High School. After evaluating options, the decision was made to pursue a metal roof system rather than asphalt shingles due to its longer life expectancy and lower long-term maintenance costs. The estimated cost of the project is approximately $2.3 million gross cost (before reimbursement) and is expected to be included as part of the Town’s upcoming bonding package. He also noted that the high school flooring replacement will be included in the same bonding effort.

The district is also exploring the potential for installing solar panels in conjunction with the new metal roof. Mr. Remington and Facilities Director Larry Plano recently met with the project architect to discuss feasibility and available incentives. In addition to state construction cost reimbursement, the solar project may qualify for a federal tax credit of approximately 30% if construction begins by the federal deadline this summer. Beginning construction before the deadline, rather than completing the entire installation, would allow the district to capture the available credit and reduce overall project costs.

Board of Selectmen February 4, 2026
Discussion of FY 26-27 Budget

First Selectman Moll reported that the proposed budget currently reflects a 3.65% increase, which is higher than the typical 3% increase. First Selectman Moll asked the Board if there were any specific areas they wished to consider for reductions at this time. A brief discussion followed, during which members reviewed figures and asked questions. It was suggested that department heads be contacted to determine whether any further reductions could be made. First Selectman Moll noted that salary information was still a moving target and he would be updating the spreadsheets as information becomes available.
