Music has the power to bring people together, inspire creativity and create lifelong memories for students. At the heart of that mission in Suffield is the Suffield Music Booster Association (SMBA), a dedicated nonprofit organization working behind the scenes to enrich music education at Suffield High School. Yes, readers, we want you to know we exist; we do some impactful work!
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, SMBA’s overall mission is simple but meaningful: to enhance the music experience for students through fundraising, volunteerism and social engagement. By working closely with music directors, students, families, and volunteers, the organization helps provide opportunities that elevate the program—from enrichment activities to special events that celebrate student musicians.
Most recently, the SMBA, with partnership from Suffield Greater Together Community Fund, provided special instructors in the classroom to increase student exposure to various types of instruction and college-level expertise. When Elise Rodriguez was asked about the experience working with special instructor, Dr. Kim, who came to SHS to work with band students, she responded, “She wasn’t exactly strict, but she really made sure we did things right. She was pretty fun, too. We realized we liked to play some of the same video games.” Dr. Janet Kim is the Director of Wind Bands and Coordinator of Large Instrumental Ensembles at the University of Connecticut.
A Devoted Team Supporting Student Musicians
SMBA is led by school parent members, President Keri McCourt, Vice President Meagan Vogus, Treasurer Christine Morissette, and Secretary Jen Metcalf, a passionate executive board committed to strengthening the high school music community. Working alongside the board are previous board members, families, students and our incredible Music Directors Corey Killian and Anthony Ferreira, whose leadership continues to guide a growing and vibrant high school music program. That growth reflects the dedication of their hard work, talent and incredible spirit. It’s clear that these two are well-loved by the students, too!
More Than Fundraising: Advocacy and Connection
While fundraising is an important part of SMBA’s work, the organization’s vision goes even further. Members are exploring ways to connect with music booster groups in other towns, advocate for a strong music program within the local education budget process and continue to identify ways to go beyond the foundational needs of a strong music program.
Concerts, Trips, Immense Gratitude and a CASH RAFFLE
The community recently celebrated a successful event, selling concessions and Cash Raffle tickets at the high school student performance of Les Miserables; maybe you saw us there! If so, wasn’t it fantastic? We would like to lift up the Suffield and neighboring townspeople right now with an enormous, “Thank you!”. You came out with big support, and I imagine the students all felt it. Kudos to the drama club and all involved. SMBA was glad to be beside them that weekend providing popcorn, snacks and drinks. The funds raised from concessions and the raffle go directly back into the band and choir student experience.
Some recent events for SHS music students included a March 16 concert, a combined choir concert at the Baptist Church on March 22, and upcoming are student trips to Germany (choir) and New Orleans (band), a senior night celebration and an end of year picnic! You’ll also see us at Suffield on the Green each September.
Now about that Cash Raffle! Students will be selling raffle tickets to family, friends, and neighbors at $5/ticket. 1st prize is $300, 2nd prize is $200 and 3rd prize is $100! Other in-town sales are also being planned at local spots in town center! Keep an eye out for us at some of your favorite coffee and grocery spots throughout the month of April, where you’ll have more chances to get in on that raffle before the drawing date of May 11! If you’re enthusiastic about supporting student musicians and enjoy local arts, SMBA welcomes you to get involved. We’d love your help!
