Girl-Powered

Nearly forty of Suffield’s Girl Scouts gathered at the VFW on Valentines Day to share their love of … derby car racing, of course!

The derby cars were cut and lovingly painted, decorated and adorned. Each car raced four times, allowing for a run on each of the four tracks. At the end of the event, trophies were given to the top cars in each of the divisions: Daisy, Brownie and Junior.

It wasn’t just speed that was rewarded; trophies for Superlatives were also given out. The “Most Creative” trophy was awarded to a car with a bubble gum dispenser on top. “All Show No Go” was awarded to an eye-catching bedazzled car. Many of the scouts had their eyes on the “Safety” trophy, which came with adorable little traffic cones and was bestowed on the car with the slowest time of the day. Safety first!

The event was organized by Troop Leader, Steve Moriarty, with lots of assistance from Suffield’s Cub Scouts, who so generously include Girl Scouts in their Pinewood Derby weekend. The race was one of the smoothest in memory. Great job, Girl Scouts!
