We had a tree-mendous time celebrating Arbor Day at McAlister Intermediate School this spring! The Helena Bailey Spencer Tree Committee planted three new Sugar Maple trees, and 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade class representatives got to help mulch and name their trees. Our helpers learned about the importance of trees, how to care for and protect them and then took those lessons back to share with the rest of their classmates.

Third grade class representatives mulched their new tree and came up with its name – “Mulchy”!
The big new, heat tolerant trees are adjusting well to their new home. They will bring much needed shade to the school’s playground, and striking fall foliage ranging from vibrant golden yellow to bright orange and red. We can’t wait to see “Mulchy” (3rd grade), “Mable” (4th grade), and “Sugar” (5th grade) grow and provide shade for years to come.
Trees for this project were purchased with a grant from the J. Gladwin Cannon Trust.
