Zach Anderson stands next to the poster for a new release of The Cat in the Hat in which he served as Production Supervisor.
As we gear up for the holiday season at the end of the year, a favorite outing for many families is to go to the movies to check out one of the new releases designed for younger viewers (and hopefully with lots of details that make for enjoyable adult viewing as well!). Among the slate of family-friendly films in upcoming months, one features a beloved classic story that is getting a brand-new, first time full-length animated version: The Cat in the Hat. What moviegoers in Suffield might be surprised to learn is that one of the people responsible for bringing 2026’s Cat in the Hat to the screen is Suffield native Zachary Anderson, who served as a Production Supervisor on the movie.
In his work, Zach oversees the daily operations of the Visual Development department, which includes a team of close to 20 creators designing all of the art that is visible in each and every frame of The Cat in the Hat. To develop the wide-ranging abilities necessary to oversee this work, Zach has built on an extensive range of experiences in filmmaking, from his earliest days at Suffield High School, to his studies at Emerson College in Boston and through professional experiences as a Casting Assistant, Production Assistant and now Production Supervisor.
In fact, Zach was already showing many of these qualities needed to find success in the high-pressure work of a producer right at Suffield High School. He and a close-knit group of friends produced numerous shorts for the school, and Zach was at the core of the first-ever lip dub at SHS, a music video that involved the entire school in 2011. Zach then moved on to Emerson where he found that he was drawn to production management, and he even produced a senior thesis film that was set in Suffield, arranging for a substantial film shoot right at SHS.
After earning a BFA in Film Production at Emerson, Zach went right into the hard work of trying to find breaks in the challenging field of film production. Following internship opportunities in Los Angeles, he and his Broadway-oriented girlfriend Ari decided to move back east to New York City (where they are still living, now a married couple). He was able to find a start in the entertainment industry working in casting for background talent in New York City, and then he made his first big break by getting hired as a Production Assistant at Blue Sky Studios for the movie Nimona, during which time he moved up to the position of Production Coordinator.
His time at Blue Sky came to an end when that studio in Greenwich, Connecticut (famous for the Ice Age movies) was purchased by Disney and subsequently shut down. Zach was able to make a move to Nickelodeon where he worked as a Production Supervisor on the Sandy Cheeks movie, a SpongeBob spinoff. After seeing that movie through its entire process from development to release and working at Nickelodeon for close to 3 years, Zach moved over to Warner Brothers Pictures Animation to work on The Cat in the Hat.
As Zach oversaw and coordinated the work on characters, sets, props, graphics and even how scenes are “lit” with digital lights through CGI programs, he found a particular satisfaction in knowing that he was working on a project based on a creation with origins very close to home, by Springfield native Dr. Seuss. It is also a distinct pleasure for him that The Cat in the Hat will have a full theatrical release, being seen by families going out to the movies together, experiencing this movie on a wide screen in an expansive darkened theater.
Viewers from Suffield will want to take their time to note the name “Zachary Joel” (Zach’s first and middle names, which he uses as a film professional) in the credits to The Cat in the Hat as one of the department heads in Production Management. Currently, Zach is working as Art Production Supervisor on an exciting new project at Skydance Animation after spending a few months developing a project at Netflix Animation Studios. Skydance Animation East has offices in Stamford from which Zach can oversee a global production between centers in Madrid, Spain and Hollywood, and this new project – whose identity is still a secret – is targeted for a worldwide release in 2028! So, stay tuned for the reveal on that project’s title and for further upcoming adventures in the moviemaking career of Suffield native Zachary Joel Anderson.
