“The Secret Lives of Owls”

This is the time of year when we are delightfully haunted by all things spooky. If you’ve ever strolled through an old New England cemetery, you may have noticed a carving that looks like a winged barn owl. Barn owls, with their ghost-like faces, were viewed as creatures of the night who could navigate darkness safely and guide the souls of the departed on their next journey.

It seems that owls have always been surrounded by an air of mystery, particularly because they are nocturnal and therefore not easily spotted in the wild. Now you have a chance to be only a few feet from these magnificent creatures. On November 2, the Suffield Garden Club is hosting wildlife rehabilitator Mary-Beth Kaeser, founder of Horizon Wings, a non-profit 501c3 center for the rehabilitation of raptors, vultures and larger corvids such as ravens and crows. For this presentation, Mary-Beth will highlight the extraordinary features of owls, including exceptional eyesight, hearing, and the ability to fly silently, and she will be bringing a Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl, and Barred Owl!

The program is free and open to interested guests. The Garden Club meets in Fellowship Hall, lower level, Second Baptist Church, Suffield. This program will begin at noon following the Garden Club’s business meeting.

The Suffield Garden Club, organized in 1934, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the beautification of Suffield and West Suffield. New members are enthusiastically welcomed!
