The Trees for Suffield Initiative and Suffield Parks and Recreation partnered to host a free event, thanks to a generous grant from the J. Gladwin Cannon Trust. The event, held at Sunrise Park in celebration of Arbor Day, was the first of many tree plantings planned for April and May.

Jackson Baldini was very pleased with the pink flowering dogwood he picked. The free native tree saplings were provided by Trees for Suffield and Bartlett Tree Experts.

Tom O’Brien, Sunrise Park superintendent, had a roaring fire warming the park’s cabin when a group of 40 adults and children headed down to the lower field for the tree planting. There, a team of hard-working guys from Bill’s Landscaping led a demonstration, planting a large native Burr Oak. Native species are important because they provide critical habitat and food sources for our native pollinators, birds and wildlife. With the tree all staked and put to bed, families gathered in the pavilion to warm by the fire, enjoying crafts and pizza before heading home with a native flowering Dogwood tree sapling of their own, courtesy of Bartlett Tree Experts.

Cold weather was not a deterrent for these tree lovers who were on hand for the planting of a new Burr Oak at Sunrise Park, including a great team from Bill’s Landscaping pictured in front, in high visibility clothing.
