Baby/Child Safety for Caregivers

School is out for the summer, and the use of a Baby/Child Caregiver may be needed to help parents assure their children are safe. Be sure anyone helping with your children is aware of your home fire safety plan and general home safety rules/ procedures.

• Show the Caregiver your home fire escape plan and make sure it is understood.
• Two ways out of every room.
• Where the outdoor meeting place is located.
• The Fire Department or Emergency phone number.
• How to unlock all doors and windows.
• If you expect your Caregiver to cook, make sure they know to:
• Keep your children at least 3 feet away from the stove and microwave oven.
• Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop.
• Keep pets off surfaces and countertops.
• If the smoke alarm sounds, ensure your Caregiver knows to:
• Get out of the home quickly with your child to safety.
• Use the second way out if smoke and/or fire blocks the way out.
• Get low and go under the smoke to the exit if an escape must be made through smoke.
• Store matches and lighters out of your child’s reach. Also, candles should never be used by your Caregiver.
• Assure your Caregiver keeps a 3 foot “kid-free zone” around heating and cooking devices.
• Be sure your Caregiver is aware of your family rules concerning bicycle, powered
vehicle and tool use.
• If you have a pool, review your rules concerning it’s use or non-use.

ALWAYS LEAVE THE PHONE NUMBER WHERE YOU CAN BE REACHED AND BE SURE THE CAREGIVER KNOWS YOUR HOME’S ADDRESS !
