Our schools serve students with a wide range of needs, and supporting them means continually looking at both the environments where they learn and the services available to them. This month, we’re sharing updates on plans for Suffield Middle School and a new partnership expanding therapeutic support for students at McAlister Intermediate School and Suffield Middle School.
Why build a modern middle school?
A school is more than a building. Its design affects how students learn, how teachers teach and how safe and comfortable everyone feels throughout the school day. Research shows that factors such as natural light, air quality, temperature and classroom design can influence student learning and well-being.
Here are some of the potential benefits of a modern school facility:
• Improved learning environments: Research from the University of Salford found that classroom design accounted for up to 16% of the variation in learning progress among primary school students. Good lighting, air quality, temperature control and acoustics all help create an environment where students can focus and learn.
• Safety and accessibility: Modern facilities can better support accessibility, security and student well-being, with spaces designed to help students feel safe, included, and connected.
• Energy efficiency: Modern heating, cooling, lighting and water systems can reduce energy use and operating costs while creating more comfortable learning environments.
• Spaces for today’s education: Flexible classrooms, science labs, technology spaces and areas for small-group instruction help schools support different learning needs and adapt as educational practices evolve.
For Suffield Middle School, these benefits are especially relevant. The Facilities Master Plan identified aging infrastructure, accessibility needs and limitations in the current educational layout. Addressing these needs is an opportunity to create a facility that better supports students and staff for decades to come.
Expanding support for students through our ESS partnership
One of the Board of Education’s highest priorities is ensuring every student in Suffield receives the individualized support they need to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. This school year, we are pleased to share an important step toward that goal.
Through a partnership with Effective School Solutions (ESS), we have introduced dedicated therapeutic support programs at McAlister Intermediate School and Suffield Middle School. ESS brings specialized clinical services directly into our school buildings, working alongside our teachers and staff to support students with complex emotional or behavioral needs.
What makes this program so transformative is its impact on where our students learn. Some students need a level of therapeutic support that goes beyond what our district has traditionally been equipped to provide. In those cases, placement in a specialized program outside Suffield may be necessary. While these placements can provide essential services, they also mean students spend time away from their local schools, classmates and community.
The new ESS programs expand our ability to provide intensive support within Suffield schools when that is the right setting for a student. They may also create opportunities for some students currently attending out-of-district programs to return to their local schools with appropriate support.
There are benefits for the wider community, too. When students can receive the services they need in-district, the Town may avoid some of the tuition and transportation costs associated with out-of-district placements.
We are proud to take this step forward for McAlister Intermediate and Suffield Middle School, ensuring our schools remain places where every child can grow, succeed, and stay connected.
