The Emergency Aid Association has funding available to subsidize participation for eligible Suffield children and youth attending Suffield Park & Rec. and other camp programs. For more information, please call the EAA.

The Salvation Army –Camp Opportunities for Young and Old

Summer camp registration has begun for the Salvation Army Camp CONNRI in beautiful Ashford, CT. The camp is open to children age 7-16 and for persons over age 50. The youth overnight camp is only $35 for four nights! Call the EAA for specific dates.

School Supply Collection Needs Your Help

The Emergency Aid Association is collecting for the “Return-to-School Backpack Program” to assist low-income school age children in Suffield. Spiral notebooks, assorted backpacks, one-inch 3-ring binders, pencils, pens, calculators, ear buds, page dividers, rulers, glue sticks, glue, erasers, pencil sharpeners, highlighters, scissors, index cards, folders, ruled paper, and pencil pouches are needed. Monetary donations are also welcome to provide for additional needs. If you can help, please drop off your donations by August 17 to the EAA located at 450 South Street in Suffield.

James F. Coggins, Jr. Community Service Award

The 2016 recipient of the James F. Coggins’ Community Service Award is Caelee Sorto. In recognition of her commitment, Caelee, a student at Suffield High School, will receive $1,000. The James Coggins’ Community Service Award is given each year to a graduating high-school senior who demonstrates selflessness, generosity and concern for the community as evidenced by their volunteer activities. The selection committee reviewed many applications and chose Caelee’s for the level of her commitment to helping others. Caelee volunteers her time teaching religious education, was an assistant soccer coach and has been a volunteer explorer for the Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association since her freshman year of high school. Caelee hopes to pursue a career in medicine as a Physician’s Assistant. On behalf of the EAA scholarship committee, we wish Caelee continued success in all her endeavors!

Durable Medical Items Available for FREE Loan to Residents

The Emergency Aid Association has many medical items available for long and short-term loan to residents, including; wheelchairs, transport chairs, folding walkers, canes, commodes & shower seats. For more information about this free service, call the EAA.

Blood Pressure Screening Clinics

The Emergency Aid Association sponsors the following free blood pressure clinics for residents of any age. Appointments are not necessary. Masonicare Partners, Home Health & Hospice, staff the clinics which are offered at the Suffield Senior Center on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 11:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. For more information contact the EAA.

Renters’ Rebate Program for the Elderly and Disabled

What is the Renters’ Rebate Program? It is a program for Connecticut renters (tenants) who are elderly or disabled and whose incomes do not go over certain limits. There is no asset limit. If you qualify, the Renters’ Rebate Program will send you a rebate check. The amount of the rebate check is based on your income, the amount of your rent and the utility bills that you paid in 2015, (excluding telephone and cable). Rebate amounts can range from $50 to $900. Applications must be made between April 1 and October 1.

You may be eligible if…

You were 65 years of age or older as of 12/31/15; or

Are the surviving spouse of someone who was eligible at the time of his/her death and over 50 years of age; or

If you are permanently and totally disabled and 18 years of age or older;

In addition, you must…

Have lived in Connecticut for any one year period; and

Have rented an apartment, a room, a mobile home, are living in cooperative housing or where property is not owned but is principal domicile by virtue of an oral or written lease; and

Have an income below $35,200/year if you are single or have a combined income below $42,900/year if you are married or in a CT civil union.

There is not an asset limit for this program. There are additional requirements for those that are renting from family members. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call the Emergency Aid Association.

You need to bring:

Copy of Social Security 1099 for 2015. If you need a copy, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or go online at ssa.gov

Copies of your electric payments for 2015. If you need help getting this information, call the EAA

Copies of your rental payments for 2015

Copies of all 1099’s for all other income sources

Copy of the front page of income tax, if filed

If disabled, current proof of disability
