Your potted mums may dry out almost before you can say Jack Sprat! This is because most mums are completely root bound when you buy them. There may be more roots than soil which makes it difficult for the soil to retain water. Here’s the remedy for this quandary: repot your mums into a larger container with fresh potting soil. Clay pots will enable the roots to breathe. Gently tamp down the new soil around the roots and water well. Depending on weather conditions, you may need to water mums daily. Mums like sun and frown upon drying out. Deadheading the spent blossoms will improve their appearance and will encourage longevity.

We have all seen potted mums rolling around in the wind with autumn leaves dancing all over them. To avoid this unwanted drama, plant or secure your replanted pot of mums in a heavy planter or urn for a prestigious look. This added effort will complement your mums’ beauty and keep them stable on windy days.

Enjoy your colorful autumn mums!
