Spaulding School grade two student Sophie O’Brien poses with her proud parents after she received the Star Kindness Award at a recent assembly.

The auditorium at A. Ward Spaulding School was a sea of blue as students proudly wore their blue Spaulding Star t-shirts for an assembly focusing on kindness.

The Spaulding Star program, aligned to the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) framework, focuses on the teaching, modeling, and celebration of the specific character traits of respect, responsibility, and kindness. After a review of the star certificates that can be earned in various settings of the school (classroom, cafeteria, playground, and bus), the school community learned about the new buddy benches installed on the playground by Eagle Scout and former Spaulding student, John Cremins. Additionally, to celebrate World Kindness Month, all teachers were presented with a copy of the book Kindness is Cooler, Mrs. Ruler, to be read with their classes on that same day. After kindness certificates were awarded to students, the assembly concluded with Wyn Jespersen, the school’s music teacher, leading the school in a kindness song. This program aligns with the school’s improvement plan of enhancing social-emotional wellness and character education programming. Spaulding Stars shine with kindness!
