Ben Bazzanno, a member of Suffield Boy Scout Troop 66, received his Eagle Scout award in an impressive ceremony on December 22. A friendly gathering of family, friends, and other Eagle Scouts watched as the traditional event unfolded, and all enjoyed a fine buffet supper afterwards.
In the ceremony, which was opened by Senior Patrol Leader David Fitzgerald and led by Scoutmaster John Riley, former Troop Committee Chairman Jim Works read the Eagle Scout Charge, demanding that the new Eagle live up to high standards of leadership and honor. With six Eagle Scouts present standing in witness, Ben pledged his commitment to that charge.
First Selectman Melissa Mack honored Ben with a commendation certificate describing his achievement with Operation Backpack, Ben’s Eagle Scout service project, and relaying the appreciation of SFD Capt. Michael Thibedeau and SPD Youth Services Officer Tom Kieselback, who had worked with Ben on the project. In Operation Backpack, Ben had led the effort and raised the funds to assemble packs containing going-to-school supplies – water bottle, crayons, pencils, paper, etc., plus a stuffed animal for comfort – to be given to young children of families in need. State Representative Tami Zawistowski presented a citation from the Connecticut General Assembly, with similar commendations. She added a personal gift: a Connecticut State Seal pin.
Ben’s remarks in response articulately expressed his thanks for the guidance and help he had received in his Scout career.
