Photo provided by the Suffield Historical Society

This portrait of Helena Bailey Spencer and seven of her dogs was taken about 70 years ago on West Suffield Mountain near the Spencer cabin. Mrs. Spencer bred pedigreed pointers in the green stable across Kent Avenue from her home in what is now known as Spencer on Main. Up on the mountain, only the cabin’s chimney remains, and the nicely cleared distant view of downtown Hartford is now obscured by young forest.
