Caring for Self & Others Health & Flu Shot Fair

Get your flu shot and take advantage of free health screenings and health information all in one place. The event will be held at the Suffield Senior Center on Tuesday, October 29 from 10 a.m.—2 p.m. On hand will be Hartford Hospital’s Digital Mammography Unit, NCDHD providing flu shots, free raffles, free food and so much more….

Battling Hunger One “Bag” at a Time is Back! 

Get Your Tickets Early –It Was a Sell-Out Last Year!!! SCA is partnering, again this year, with three other area food programs on this exciting fundraiser to be held on Friday, October 25. The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall located at 566 Enfield Street in Enfield. Individual tickets are $35 and include 10 bingo games and the stamper. Table reservations can be made for groups of eight purchasing tickets in advance and will include a bonus pack of 10 games for the group. BYO snacks and drinks! Hartford Hospital’s “Take the Time” Digital Mobile Mammography will be in Suffield on October 29! 

If you are a woman over the age of 40, and have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months, you can sign up for a screening that day. This state-of-the-art digital mammography technology has benefitted over 7,000 woman in the Greater Hartford area and neighboring communities. All screenings are conducted on the coach bus and screening takes less than 15 minutes with privacy and comfort assured. Available time slots are limited so sign up early. Reservations are required by October 14. Call SCA 860-668-1986.

The Memory Café 

 For those with early to moderate cognitive loss, their friends and family. Come for fun, company and conversation. The Café will be open every second Wednesday and the last Tuesday of each month at The Suffield Senior Center. Due to the conflict with the health fair, the Café will be held on November 5 instead of October 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please RSVP to Pat Beeman, MSW. Are You in Need of a Little Holiday Cheer? 

Apply for the SCA’s Holiday Basket Program: The SCA is coordinating the Thanksgiving and Holiday Basket Program for Suffield residents. Residents wishing to receive help for the holidays are encouraged to call Janet at the SCA to see if they qualify at 860-668-1986.

Stay Warm This Winter! 

 We Are Taking Applications for the CT Energy Assistance Program: These government programs are designed to help offset the winter heating costs for financially eligible households so that their health is not jeopardized by the inability to afford critical heat. Please contact SCA to schedule an appointment at 860-668-1986. More information on eligibility is available at www.ct.gov/staywarm

Parkinson’s Peer Support Group 

Meets Monthly at the Suffield Senior Center: The group’s goal is to share ideas and resources in the management and treatment of Parkinson’s disorder. Meetings are typically held the second Monday of each month from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Due to Columbus Day, the group will meet October 21 at 11:30 a.m. instead. Caregivers are welcome and encouraged to attend. Topics vary monthly. Refreshments are served. For more information, call Janet at SCA-860-668-1986.

Dementia Caregiver Support Group

The group meets the last Tuesday of each month at Suffield Senior Center, 145 Bridge Street, Suffield at 11 a.m. The next meeting is October 29. You do not need to be a resident of Suffield to attend. The group is led by a trained Alzheimer’s Association facilitator, Nicole Matson of Home Helpers of Central CT.
