Rob Howe explains the operation of his big evaporator to neighbor Donna Barton and her cousin Jerry MacDonald. With sugaring partner Scott Miller, Rob boiled down over 100 gallons of sap into three delicious gallons of maple syrup that lovely Saturday morning in mid-March. About a half dozen friends had gathered to help and socialize, with a rich pot of chili simmering in the rustic kitchen part of the sugar shack on North Grand Street. Rob said this was not a great year for sugaring.
