Ponies in the Front Yard

Mary Calcasola poses with the two grapevine ponies she made for her front yard on Russell Avenue.

Two interesting creations recently appeared in a front yard just a short distance off North Main Street.  They were designed and constructed by Mary Calcasola, who has lived in Suffield for many years and moved to Russell Avenue not long ago.  To enliven her landscape, she put her good sense of design to work, along with great imagination in choosing building materials.  She made a basic framework out of wire tomato-growing hoops and wrapped that in barbed wire to hold the outer layers, for which she used grape vines.  Voila! Two ponies.  For some very realistic manes, she used dried, stringy material from lavender herbs.  The effect is most successful.  Mrs. Calcasola is now building a chicken coop for the backyard – a real one.  There are no plans for grape vine chickens.
