Colonial Adventure Camp

Join the staff of the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden for a very special virtual version of our beloved summer camp series, Colonial Adventure Camp! The virtual camp will take students on a journey through time to explore traditional crafts, and introduce young historians to the life and times of early America in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Through Zoom group lessons, on-demand tutorial videos, and written instructions, students ages 8 to 12 will learn how to bind a hand-made journal, test out their green thumbs by planting a pea plant, venture outside to build a fairy house, create wallpaper prints inspired by the historic house’s 200-year-old French wallpaper, write letters with a quill and ink, and of course, enjoy tea and conversation – a favorite of returning campers. This unique take on our traditional in-person camp will spark the imagination and inspire creativity in young historians as they are encouraged to envision what life was like in a bustling new nation.

Far from your typical online class, the Virtual Colonial Adventure Camp provides a week of historical fun with pre-packaged and ready to assemble craft boxes – complete with all the necessary supplies. During this historic moment, students will compare their lives to youth of the past. How are they different, how are they the same? Will you end up in the history books one day?

The Virtual Colonial Adventure Camp will be held Monday through Friday, July 27 to 31. Our virtual camp will meet twice per day via Zoom from 10 – 11 a.m., and then again from 1 – 2 p.m. Admission includes one craft box per camper, access to on-demand how-to craft videos and written instructions, historical fact sheets, two sixty minute Zoom sessions per day with museum staff, and a one year family membership to Connecticut Landmarks.

Extra help sessions will be provided from 11 – 11:30 a.m. and 2 – 2:30 p.m. by appointment. Registration required as space is limited; please reserve your spot by July 13th. For more information and to register, contact phelps.hatheway@ctlandmarks.org or visit www.ctlandmarks.org/camps. Our Colonial Adventure Camp is designed for ages 8 to 12. Cost is $175 per camper; sibling discount available. For campers wishing to delve deeper into the craft activities, supplemental add-on activities and tutorials are available to purchase for an additional fee at time of registration.

Sampler Camp

Two intent sewers learn how to embroider in a prior year’s sampler camp.

Join the staff of the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden for a very special virtual version of our beloved summer camp series. The Virtual Summer Sampler Camp will take students on a journey through time to explore traditional skills and learn about the young women and men who made – and changed – history from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Through Zoom group lessons, on-demand tutorial videos, and written instructions, students ages 11 to 15 are invited to sew a needle case, embroider a pillow case, create a fashion accessory, learn about the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage, plant their own victory gardens, and, of course, enjoy tea and conversation – a favorite of returning campers. This unique take on our traditional in-person camp will spark the imagination and inspire creativity in young historians as they are encouraged to record and share their own history. The week will culminate with a student curated exhibit, and an opportunity to share their craft projects.
