Bowling Buddies group walk

The need for community connections and meaningful events and activities has always been essential, but during these challenging and uncertain times during the COVD-19 pandemic, it has become even more vital. When countless things in people’s lives have been canceled and feelings of isolation and stress have been at an all-time high for many, the Parks and Recreation Department has come up with a variety of alternative ways to still offer several virtual and in person programs while taking all the necessary safety guidelines into consideration.

The Bowling Buddies program has been one of the Department’s longest running programs in terms of years, time and weekly duration. Generally, the group practices and meets at Spare Time Lanes in Windsor Locks each Tuesday from September through May (30 weeks) and has a variety of outings throughout the year in addition. Due to the pandemic, we have not been able to have our in-person bowling program but instead have been running a weekly Zoom program since the end of March 2020 and have also included some enjoyable outdoor walks and exercise events.

New Year’s fireworks displays from Sydney, Australia, parades and floats from Disney, holiday lights from around town and abroad, these are some of the fun places we have “gone” virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each week, there is a new theme with games and trivia including- World Holidays, Disney, election and inauguration history, music, sports, Suffield and Connecticut history. We also play other fun games including tailored “Scategories” paired with the theme of the week, exercise breaks and group crossword puzzles. Even though we haven’t been able to get back to our in- person bowling yet, the weekly Zoom programs offers the group an enjoyable time to still get together with friends and connect again.
