PARKS & REC NEWS

One of the weekends that I personally look forward to all year is “Suffield on the Green” weekend and all that it has to offer. It is like a “homecoming” for those that have moved away, and a chance for everyone to get together, and have a great time! The Suffield Parks and Recreation 5k & 10k Road Race, presented by PeoplesBank, is the official kick-off for that weekend, and this year it was as spectacular as the beautiful weather. Our Road Race Committee, Staff, and Commission put in a tremendous amount of work leading up to race day to add in some new features, and the runners responded with a record size runner field for both races. Families took part in the Kids Fun Run and received prizes and a goodie bag courtesy of Dick’s Sporting Goods, while 94.7 WMAS and Suffield’s Chris Kellogg was the DJ for the day. Chris added so much fun with music and was able to announce the runners as they crossed the finish line when completing the race. Runners were treated to new quarter zip pullovers, cool race t-shirts, and even refreshments. It was an amazing event to kick off an amazing weekend in Suffield.

First place finishers:
5K Suffield Female – CristinWojtas, 24:23
5K Suffield Male – Christopher Swenson, 22:29
10K Suffield Female – Kate Brenia, 47:52
10K Suffield Male – Nate Davidson, 34:22

September also means fall sports for our youth. Soccer and field hockey are off to great starts, with volunteer coaches making the leagues extra special. Parents, aunts, uncles, and even players from Suffield High School’s soccer and field hockey teams lend their time and expertise to help make great memories for the players, while teaching skills along the way. I love the sense of responsibility when it comes to giving back to one’s community and making a positive difference in young people’s lives.

September is also the month when we launch our popular Special Olympics’ bowling program. With extra precautions due to the Covid virus, our bowling group is finally able to get together in person and practice the sport they love! To say they were excited is an understatement. I cannot wait to share with you pictures and videos of the group enjoying themselves.

As September comes to a close, we are looking far ahead to future programs. October will be filled with fun and games centered around Halloween and fall themes. While November and December start the holiday seasonal events, and basketball too. Keep an eye out for all the happenings, including “Suffield Night” at the American Hockey League’s Springfield Thunderbirds’ game, at www.suffieldrec.com and be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook, both of which are found at: @suffieldrec. We post often, and it is a great way to stay connected.

Until next time, get out and enjoy our beautiful parks, open space, activities, and our community.
