Rotary Student of the Month for March

Congratulations to John Henry Burke who was chosen as the March Rotary Student of the Month. Jack has volunteered for many activities in and outside of Suffield High School. In 2020, Jack volunteered to plan, draft and produce a commercial for Hilltop Farm as an Individual Service Project, where the final video was displayed on the front page of Hilltop’s website. In addition, Jack volunteered to clean up at Hilltop Farm and gave his time to help with a Bee House Building Event.

Jack has been a Peer Tutor and has helped many students who needed help with their school work. Jack has been the Cameraman for the Athletic department, where he helped record the Boys’ Soccer homecoming game, as well as helping to live-stream various sporting events. Jack has volunteered to help raise money for the Band/Chorus Field Trip. Jack has volunteered as a Camp Counselor for the Connecticut Audubon Society. At his church in Windsor Locks, Jack is a lector for weekly mass, has been a reader for “Lessons and Carols” event, and has helped collect donated Turkeys for Thanksgiving.

At Suffield High School, Jack is a High Honors student and a member and President of National Honor Society (students who possess Leadership, Service, Character and Academic Excellence), World Language Honor Society and a member of Class Council.
Jack has been a news anchor and crew member of the Morning Update show at Suffield High throughout his four years here. In fact, this year Jack is the Director of the Morning Update, in charge of making sure the program runs smoothly. Jack is a member of the Chamber Ensemble, Unified Theater and Drama Club where he has had many lead roles throughout his career. He is the Bass Section Leader of the school choir. He also plays the trombone in the band, Jazz band and has been playing the piano since 1st Grade.

Jack has received many awards during his time at SHS, most recently receiving the Connecticut Association of Schools Performing Arts Award. He has received Awards in Excellence for Social Studies, Film and Video, Mathematics, World Language, Chamber Ensemble, Biology and English. Jack has received the Rotary Club Citizenship Award, which is based on service, self-sacrifice, industry and a spirit of cooperation on behalf of school and community. He also received the Mount Holyoke Book Award for academic achievement, leadership and involvement in the community.

Jack is a leader in the Suffield Sustainability Council. He has helped to implement a composting program at Suffield High School and has created videos to promote sustainable habits. He has taken a virtual Harvard class over the summer about the various health effects of Climate Change. In his spare time, he worked as a Games Team Member at Six Flags New England.
