Superintendent Year-end Update

It is hard to believe that the end to our 2021-2022 school year is already upon us. Fortunately, our school district was afforded the opportunity to experience a school year with far greater consistency than we were anticipating. As a result, we were able to focus on teaching and learning and providing our students access to all the extra-curricular opportunities that make each school year unique and memorable. This is not to say that there were not adversities we faced. However, this year provided us with a reminder regarding the importance of our schools in bringing consistency and normalcy to all our lives. I would like to thank our Board of Education, students, faculty and staff, families and the community of Suffield for helping to support the progress we have made as a school district this year. We look forward to the opportunity that awaits in 2022-2023.

As we continue on our journey toward excellence, it is important that we reflect on our current accomplishments and areas for growth as we establish our goals for the upcoming school year. In response to the academic, social, and emotional impacts the pandemic created, our schools entered the 2021-2022 school year with the objective of making up for the learning loss of the previous academic year. Significant planning was done to ensure that our students would be provided access to challenging, innovative and engaging instructional programs and student activities that would enhance their school experience. Toward this end, each school developed their own comprehensive advancement plan that prioritized student assessment and outcomes and was in alignment with the goals of the district. Throughout the year, school administration and their faculty worked in partnership with one another to closely monitor student progress, identify areas where further support was needed, and intervene when necessary. In addition to closely monitoring academic achievement, our Pupil Services team focused their attention on the social and emotional needs of our students. They put forth tremendous effort to address the mental health and well-being of our students by researching best practices, engaging with parents and guardians, and individualizing interventions and supports that addressed areas of concern. In preparation for the 2022-2023 academic year, we will utilize the important insight we obtained from monitoring our programs and interventions and the data we have collected. Classroom lessons, intervention practices, instructional materials, and staff collaboration will be a continued focus for us as we plan ahead. Most importantly, we will continue to engage our students in both curricular and extra-curricular opportunities as we aspire to meet and advance the mission of the Suffield Public Schools to prepare all students with the knowledge, skills, and attributes required for success in a rapidly-changing world.

Beyond the classroom, our student athletics and student activities became an important outlet for our students to engage with one another, explore their interests, and share their talents with others. Interscholastic and intramural sports, drama performances, band and vocal music concerts, state and national conventions, and evening events were all activities that our students were able to extend themselves and make up for last year. I would like to thank our student associations, faculty and staff, Booster Club, Parent-Teacher Associations, Town of Suffield Youth Services, and our Parks and Recreation for coming together to help bring many smiles and enjoyable moments to our students and our entire community.

In closing, and on behalf of the Board of Education and the faculty and staff of the Suffield Public Schools, I would like to celebrate our entire graduating Class of 2022 for their many accomplishments throughout their journey through the Suffield Public Schools. Their high academic achievement, civic-mindedness, and their genuineness has left an indelible mark on our schools, our district, and the community of Suffield. We wish them all the best as they embark on this next chapter of their lives. I would also like to take this moment to recognize and congratulate our Valedictorian Sarah Whitehouse and Salutatorian Emily Brydges for setting such a high standard of excellence for our all current and future students of the Suffield Public Schools. Their commitment to their academics, as well as, their civic and athletic accomplishments are to be commended, and we thank them for exemplifying the ideals of a Suffield Public Schools graduate.

Congratulations to our Suffield High School Class of 2022!
