After a one-month installation project, it looked like the new multi-use trail for about a mile along Mountain Road was ready to open on July 1. At press time all paving and back-filling were complete, new grass regions had been hydro-seeded, new crosswalks were painted, the three new sets of crosswalk signals were up and functioning, and all that was left was the installation of long lengths of wood rail fencing. First Selectman Colin Moll reported that he planned to walk the length of the trail after the ribbon-cutting.
It will be interesting to observe the success of the three new crosswalk signals along the state highway. The “red rapid-flashing beacons” at Middle School, Sacred Heart Church, and Sheldon Street are reputed to create much better driver response.
