Low Mobility Exercise Class: SCA will be sponsoring an additional 6-week “Low Mobility Exercise Class” series, facilitated by Joseph Hicks, at the Suffield Senior Center. The series will resume on Wednesdays and Fridays, beginning September 9, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Spaces are limited. Call the Senior Center to register at 860-668-8830.

In-Person Bereavement Support Group Starts up Again:
Masonicare is partnering with Suffield Community Aid to offer a 6-week in-person support group for people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The group will meet at SCA, 450 South Street, Suffield, beginning Friday, September 16, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This program is offered at no cost. Registration is required, and the expectation is that all participants will be fully vaccinated. Please call SCA for more information, 860-668-1986.

Parkinson’s Peer Support Group at the Suffield Senior Center: After a brief summer hiatus, our first fall meeting is scheduled for September 13 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Suffield Senior Center (145 Bridge Street), and will include a pizza lunch. Call SCA – 860-668-1986 to register your attendance.

Social Service Consultations at Kent Memorial Library: Back by popular demand, Pat Beeman, MSW, has resumed free, initial consultation hours on the third Thursday of each month at Kent Memorial Library. Pat serves as Suffield’s appointed Municipal Agent for the Elderly. Residents wishing to schedule a confidential consultation for September 15 can register online by going to suffield-library.org If you prefer to come to the office, call 860-668-1986.

Stay Warm This Winter! – We Are Taking Applications for the CT Energy Assistance Program:   This government program helps offset the winter heating costs for financially eligible households. SCA is taking applications now in preparation for the November program start date. Please contact SCA to apply at 860-668-1986.

Hartford Hospital’s “Take the Time” Digital Mobile Mammography is Coming Back to Suffield: Hartford Hospital’s Digital Mobile Mammography coach bus will be back in Suffield on TWO different dates: Wednesday, September 28 at the Suffield Senior Center and Saturday, October 22 at McAlister Intermediate School, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. These screenings will be offered to women over the age of 40 who have not had a mammogram in the last year. All screenings take less than 15 minutes, with privacy and comfort assured. Pre-registration is required, and appointments are limited. Call SCA 860-668-1986.

Some Ongoing Programs and Updates:
Fresh Produce Available: Thanks to our new and much improved garden, SCA has fresh vegetables that are available to low-income residents. Please contact SCA if you’d like to be added to our contact list when produce is available.

Have Lunch on Us!: SCA offers lunch subsidies for low-income seniors to enjoy the delicious and nutritious Senior Center lunches twice per week. Give SCA a call to see if you qualify!

Renter’s Rebate Program for Elderly & Disabled Residents:  The State provides a reimbursement program for renters who are elderly or disabled, and whose incomes do not exceed certain limits. Rebates are based on a percentage of income versus rent & utility expenses. SCA is scheduling appointments now.

We Have Durable Medical Equipment: SCA maintains a small medical loan closet of walkers, commodes, bed rails, canes, crutches, and more for Suffield residents at no cost. Stop in or give us a call if you or a loved one could benefit from a short-term or permanent loan.

Free Blood Pressure Screenings at the Suffield Senior Center: Suffield Community Aid sponsors free blood pressure clinics for residents of all ages at the Suffield Senior Center on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m. to noon. No appointments needed.

In preparation for our “Return -to-School” Backpack Program, Charlie Slater (pictured), is hard at work stuffing supply bags to ensure that each student is well-prepared for the first day of school.
