Meghan Voisine “Kindness Matters” Grants Available

There’s still plenty of time to apply for a Kindness Matters grant, in honor of Meghan Voisine. Individual youth and youth groups in grades 5-12 are encouraged to submit their grant proposals by March 17, with their ideas to spread kindness, inclusion, and promote diversity in Suffield. Applications can be found on your child’s school website or by emailing Danielle at daniellea@suffieldcommunityaid.org

Spring/Easter Basket Program:

Thanks to the generosity of our local Girl Scout troops and community partners, SCA will have spring baskets with toys, candy, and goodies available for eligible Suffield families. Please call SCA if you’re interested (860) 668-1986.

James F. Coggins, Jr. Community Service Award Open to Applicants!

In memory of our late volunteer and Board Member, James F. Coggins, Jr., SCA offers a $1,000 award to a graduating Suffield high school senior who demonstrates selflessness, generosity and concern for the community through their volunteer activities. Applicants are required to submit a 500-word essay, by midnight on May 8, supporting their selection to SCA at 450 South Street, Suffield 06078 or email to Danielle at daniellea@suffieldcommunityaid.org

Jane Purtill Fuller Scholarship for Nursing or Social Service Candidates:

To recognize the many contributions of our past employee and long-time supporter of Suffield Community Aid, the Board of Directors dedicates an annual needs-based scholarship in memory of Jane Purtill Fuller. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Suffield High School senior pursuing a nursing or social service field of study. Applicants wishing to apply are encouraged to fill out the common application at Suffield High School or call SCA at 860-668-1986. The application deadline is Monday, May 8.

Kathy Ostrowski Memorial Nursing Scholarship:

In honor of beloved nurse and former SCA Board member Kathy Ostrowski, SCA will award a needs-based scholarship to a high school senior pursing a degree in nursing. Applicants wishing to apply are encouraged to fill out the common application at Suffield High School or call SCA at 860-668-1986. The application deadline is Monday, May 8.

Some Ongoing Programs and Updates:

Memory Café:
Pat Beeman, MSW, holds a monthly informal group for individuals with cognitive loss and their loved ones. Join her for casual conversations and light refreshments on the last Tuesday of each month from 11 a.m. – 12 noon at the Senior Center. The next meeting will be held on March 28. Registration is required. Please call SCA to register.

Parkinsons Peer Support Group:
SCA hosts a monthly Parkinsons Peer Support Group at the Senior Center on the second Tuesday of each month. March’s group will be held on March 14 from 11 a.m. – noon. Join us for pizza and refreshments. Registration is required. Please call SCA to RSVP.

Does your child want to attend camp, but costs are too high?
Summer is right around the corner! SCA has funding available to subsidize camp costs for eligible Suffield Children and youth who wish to attend Suffield Parks & Rec and other camp programs.

Social Service Consultations at Kent Memorial Library:
Pat Beeman, MSW, holds office hours the third Tuesday of each month at the KML. Residents wishing to schedule a consultation on March 21 can register online by going to suffield-library.org. If you prefer to come to the office, call 860-668-1986.

Stay Warm This Winter! – We are Still Taking Applications for the CT Energy Assistance Program:
These government programs help offset the winter heating costs for financially eligible households. Please contact SCA to apply at 860-668-1986. More information on eligibility is available at www.ct.gov/staywarm

Free Blood Pressure Screening at the Suffield Senior Center:
Suffield Community Aid sponsors free blood pressure clinics for residents of all ages at the Suffield Senior Center on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 11:00 a.m. – noon. No appointments needed.
