Saturday, June 10 will be the 19th celebration of Connecticut Open House Day! The Friends of the Farm at Hilltop (FOFAH) are particularly excited to offer an “Open Barn” event this year. We have received a certificate of occupancy and are finally able to invite visitors into the big white barn. We look forward to showing off the space and the gorgeous new History of Hilltop panels that illustrate the Hendee, Stroh and FOFAH stories. Event hours are 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
In addition to the open barn, visitors are welcome to explore the farmstead, learn to encourage pollinators at our pollinator, butterfly, and hummingbird gardens and visit the new photo garden. Kids can enjoy an outdoor scavenger hunt and can play with the Tonka trucks in our sand pile.
We also have several special events planned for Saturday:
- The Hampden County Beekeepers Association raises queen bees in their hives at Hilltop. They will be hosting a beekeeping demonstration for us.
- Hilltop Chicks, a Suffield agriscience student-supervised agricultural experience at Hilltop, will offer a program on caring for chickens.
- The Westfield Wheelmen, our local vintage base ball team will play a double-header in the Hilltop East open space, starting at 10 a.m. the games will probably finish around 2 p.m. Vintage base ball, played by more than 200 teams around the country, is still called base ball because it is played according to regulations and rules codified in the mid-1800’s.
The Hilltop Farm Store and Creamery will be open all afternoon, selling ice cream, milk shakes, floats, and coolers that you can enjoy in the shade of our oak grove.
