In honor of Meghan Voisine, who tragically lost her life in 2021, “Kindness Matters” grant applications will reopen for youth and youth groups in Suffield, grades 5-12 to share their ideas to promote kindness, inclusion and friendship in Suffield. Be on the lookout for the application release on Monday, October 16 at McAlister, SMS, and SHS. What SCA is Spotlighting this Month:

Are you paying too much for Medicare? Open Enrollment from October 15 through December 7 is your chance to check and change your coverage. SCA’s trained, unbiased volunteer is available by appointment to help you figure out your options. Please give us a call to schedule your appointment: (860) 668-1986.

Are You in Need of a Little Holiday Cheer? Apply for the SCA’s Holiday Basket Program: SCA is coordinating the Thanksgiving and Holiday Basket Program for financially qualified Suffield residents. Residents wishing to receive help for the holidays are encouraged to call SCA at: 860-668-1986.

Stay Warm This Winter! – We Have Started Taking Applications for the CT Energy Assistance Program:
This government program helps to offset the winter heating costs for financially eligible households. Please contact SCA to apply or email Beth at beths@suffieldcommunityaid.org to learn more.

Food Drive for People and Pets at the Polls to benefit the SCA Food Pantry:
SCA volunteers will hold a benefit drive at the election polls (Suffield Middle School) on Tuesday, November 7 from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. We are especially in need of paper towels, toilet paper, canned pasta, condiments, spaghetti sauce, coffee, lunch box snacks, personal care items and cleaning supplies. Cash and grocery store gift cards are also welcome donations at this time of year.

Some Ongoing Programs and Updates:

Parkinson’s Peer Support Group at the Suffield Senior Center: The next meeting is scheduled for October 10 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 (noon) at 450 South St. (Suffield Community Aid) and will include a pizza lunch. Call Danielle at SCA – 860-668-1986 to register your attendance.

Low Mobility Exercise Series: Join Joseph Hicks at the Senior Center, for a chair exercise class, sponsored by SCA. No cost to join, and it’s not too late! Classes are on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11-11:30 a.m. and will run through October 27. Register at the Senior Center.

Would Adult Day Care Open Up Your World? SCA has a partnership with the Windsor Caring Connection to ensure that our residents have access to quality adult day care. SCA will provide introductory subsidies. The Caring Connection is open M-F 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and provides socialization, structure, medication management and personal care with on-site nursing.

Social Service Consultations at Kent Memorial Library: Pat Beeman, MSW holds office hours the third Thursday of the month at the KML. Pat serves as Suffield’s appointed Municipal Agent for the Elderly. Residents wishing to schedule a consultation for October 19 can register online by going to suffield-library.org. If you prefer to come to the office, call 860-668-1986.

Are there Places You Want to go, but Transportation is not Available? In conjunction with Nutmeg Senior Rides, SCA can help financially qualified seniors, age 65 and older or persons with disabilities, get to where they want to go when the Suffield Mini-Bus is not available. Nutmeg Senior Rides provides door-to-door transportation, for any purpose, 365 days a year. Call SCA to see if you qualify.

Friendly Reminder: Mobile Foodshare
The Mobile Foodshare Truck will be onsite at the West Suffield Congregational Church (1408 Mountain Rd) on Tuesday, October 10 and 24 from 1:15-1:45 p.m.. This service is free and open to all residents. No financial qualifications or appointments are required.
